明嘉靖年间，一对独孤皇后演员表恋人张金生、王玉环到山亭避雨时遇上贺总兵之子贺三郎。贺调戏玉环未遂，坠涧身亡。贺总兵责令该县县官黄伯贤将玉环斩首，黄不忍屈斩无辜，将其释放。黄女秀兰、义女丘萍担心父亲落难，皆愿替玉环去死；玉环也怕恩人吃罪，不肯离去。无奈，3女在神像前争抢"生死牌"，结果，秀兰抢得"死"牌。法场上，贺总兵看出破绽，下令缓刑验犯，并将黄伯贤押监。待伯贤等人行刑之日，幸遇湖广巡按海瑞，于是冤情大白。
